Light Work: Intro to Studio lighting

Intro to Studio Lighting Workshop

Lighting is one of the most important parts of creating a strong image, but for many creatives, studio lighting can feel intimidating, overly technical, or difficult to approach.

Intro to Studio Lighting is a beginner friendly, hands-on workshop designed to simplify the fundamentals of studio lighting and help participants better understand how light behaves, how to shape it, and how to use it with intention.

This workshop focuses on practical understanding over complicated theory. Participants will explore how small changes in light position, distance, direction, and modifiers can dramatically change the look and feel of a photograph.

Through live demonstrations and guided setup exercises, attendees will learn:

  • The fundamentals of studio lighting

  • The difference between hard and soft light

  • How light placement affects mood, depth, and storytelling

  • Basic modifier usage and purpose

  • How to build simple lighting setups with confidence

  • How to observe and “read” light more intentionally

The first lighting workshop at Come Uptown Studios will be hosted by @Joe_Chea and guest @IslandBoiPhotography. This workshop focuses on making a fundamentally sound portrait with just 1 light, The Basics. This workshop will cover the basics of working with any single monolight , efficiently, in any studio space . We will cover different types of lighting modifiers, what they do, how to manage the results, how to set up a single light, and eventually how to produce a properly lit portrait with an assistant and solo, and much more. This is a LIGHTING AND PHOTOGRAPHY SPECIFIC Workshop. This is the last workshop at Come Uptown Studios for the year, but there will be plenty of many workshops in our Community + Creativity Series in the coming year.

Lastly, the space for these workshops will be limited in order to make sure the attendees will have the best possible learning experience. After the workshop, we will have a brief meet and greet segment where you can expand your creative networks and list of peer-based resources.
